Annual General Meeting 2019

 In News

”Learning the language” was this year’s AGM theme, VEN’s third since starting on June 20th, 2016. A big thank you to the members and non-members alike who joined us on Wednesday, March 20th from 18:00 to 20:30 at Foreningernes Hus in Vejle. And an extra special thank you to Louise Nielsen from Newcomers Services in Vejle Kommune and Amir Samkani, job consultant from Jobcenter Vejle.

Dana Cernat from Grønt Forum acted as our meeting chairperson. Many thanks to Dana for doing a fantastic job of keeping our meeting within our timeframe.

The evening opened with Luiza Onciu Pappara giving an overview of the results of the VEN ud på landet project, which concluded last fall. Nina Chatelain gave an overview of the many events VEN initiated and achieved in 2018, among these was the ‘Verden kommer til Vejle’ event that was part of the Vejle’s Folkemøde. For an overview of all of our events, read our blog posts.

Following the annual report of events, Nicole Buller presented an overview of this year’s accounts and next year’s projected budget, which were approved by the attending members. Both Nina Chatelain and Luiza Onciu Pappara were re-elected as board members for the next two years. Desirée Suhr Pérez will continue as an alternate board member, and a big welcome to Romy Montaňo Galarza and Merve Çevik for joining us as two additional alternate board members. The new board will be constituted by April 1st, 2019.

A big thank you and fond farewell to Lorna Brown, who has been an essential part of the board for the past two years. We wish you all the best in your new home in Plymouth, England.

Once again this year, Mohamed made a delicious variety of Palestinian food. All of this year’s participants were asked to share their ideas for this year’s events. Under VEN’s association umbrella, other projects are possible. Anyone who has a burning idea and the time and energy to develop and fulfill it is welcome to contact the board.

In keeping with our theme, the evening ended with an entertaining and informative talk entitled ‘Language Barriers’ by Amira Saric, Business and Education Consultant from Sprogcenter Vejle. Amira talked about how instead of thinking of language as a barrier, we should consider language as being a bridge for connecting and communicating with one another. Language makes up only a part of actual communication. The take away message was how it is important to learn Danish and find yourself in the Danish language. No one needs to speak like a native, but learning Danish will help you immeasurably if you plan to stay in Denmark.
